I would be deeply saddened if the Adult School
does not continue as it is, and has been since I moved here thirteen years ago, an important part of my life. Not only have I learned many new skills, especially through the excellent computer classes, but I have throughly enjoyed the art classes taught by knowledgable teachers. These classes have opened new vistas for me, enabled me to find my way as an artist, and put me in touch with many like-minded people who need the social contact we find in the diverse courses. I hope you will think long and hard before shutting down such a valuable community resource.

Being low income, I don't know if she will be able to get help, the colleges are also in trouble. How do we keep our kids in school, parents are working two jobs. For 90 years Adult Ed has enriched our community in helping to develop social and technical skills and to inspire creativity as an integral part of a civilized society.

A loss of any programs - Parent Ed, Older Adults, ESL, Citizenship, Computers, Art, Basic education in the jails is a loss to all.

In economic hard times your continuing support is even more essential and deeply appreciated.

Everywhere I go in the United States the language is English, in my work, at the doctors, with friends, with the family, for example with my grandsons they speak only English. This is a problem to live in the US and to not speak in English. For example in my case I started to study late after my kids were grown. Now I have time to study. I am learning now but not enough. This is the reason I want to continue to study and to be independent and find a better job. Please don't cut this service. I have become a US citizen.

Education was always important for my family. It is never late to study.
When I came to the U.S. I hardly spoke any English even though I used to study it in school.
I'm planning to go to Carbillo College in a Fall to study an Accounting. It is very hard to study in language that is not your native. So I decided to go to Adult school to improve my English. Santa Cruz Adult school helps me a lot. I made a progress. I took an English test at Cabrillo and I got into English 100 which in medium level that most Americans get into usually. I'm very happy! I thank you all people at Adult school and my teacher Peggy Miles for an opportunity to get a higher education and get a good job in a future.

I think that the Santa Cruz Adult School is not only important for us to learn English but also it is important because it helps us to better understand this culture and makes our integration in this society easier.
During this school year I learned a lot of grammar, vocabulary and spelling, but the most precious thing for me is the respectful and beautiful atmosphere in which people from all over the world know each other. This kind of experience makes me a better person, more tolerant and empathic with different cultures.

The more people know English the better. English became the most spoken language in all over the world. It brings a lot of prestige to the USA. People all over the world respect the USA and the Americans.
Also, it is very important to be able to help our children to integrate into american society, to help them learn well at school, to prevent them from bad companies, drugs and so on.Parents must speak English well in order to keep our children's respect, to be united with them and thus, to bring up good citizens for the country.

  69. Santa Cruz Adult School has been for me the a great help to fit and understand this society in which I felt no part of.
In addition to learn English I have learned to understand the way Americans think and act. I am eternally grateful with my school because when I came I felt that I wasn't going to fit. But now I can get involved in many things, study in Cabrillo and even help my sister to study English.
Please do not close this school. If you close it the community of no-English speakers will be stuck without opportunities to get a better life.

When I came to Santa Cruz I could never imagine the great work that the adult school is making not only of learning English but also integrating people in American culture.
In those classes we have learned more that English. This is a very important meeting point for the forening comunity to be in contact, to help each other and provide information about the life in the city and the opportunities for finding a job, a house or the more basics things in the common life.
It is very important for the community to keep the adult school open. I'm sure education is the most important tool for the integration not only for students, but also for their children and the future generation, who will speak English at home, understand the national culture, and share the points of view of the American population. Only then will they become citizens.
Of course I have learned a lot of English language, that was my most important goal when I came, and now I can say that in the two month that I have attended classes I really have learned the basics of the English language and now I can try to learn by my self.
I only would like to be able to take classes again next year to learn more.
    Thanks a lot

  84. As a local senior citizen, I look forward to attending new classes & expanding my horizons, so to say. Please leave our adult school to give us the opportunity to do just that and letting us feel a part of the community. My neighbors select classes also & sometimes we attend together making it a fun thing to do. Again please leave adult school available for us. Thank you.

  85. I've lived in SC for 15 years and have utilized Santa Cruz Adult Sch numerous times - being a single parent raising 2 boys, the school has been critical toward my finding and maintaining longterm employment, and to furthering my education as well as my children's education. We pay taxes, we pay for classes - to terminate the school or to make the classes prohibitively expensive is like shooting yourself in the foot --
stupid and self defeating. Keep Santa Cruz forward thinking, don't lose SCAS!
    Thanks,
    Karrie

  98. As anyone can see by reading these posts, the impact of Santa Cruz Adult School on the lives of our community is HUGE! I am deeply saddened to think that what we have built over the years is in jeopardy. SCAS embodies the best in education: It is the bridge for such a diverse population to: opportunity, connection, a place where unique talents are recognized, where we can celebrate the joy of our commonality. We can and must work together to save our school. Thank you Tina, for creating this blog and letting our voices be heard. Lori Colman: ESL teacher at SCAS since 1978.

  113. When I came to the USA my firts time. I kenw that it was totally different than my country. I was pretty scared when I arrived to San Francisco airport. The immigration police asked for my documents, then I looked at him and he realized that I did not understand any English. I felt embarrased and scared at the same time. When I left the immigration officer's desk I could breathe again. At the time my English was almost none. After my first week I came. My husband took me to the school and registrated me. I thought that learning English would take me a couple of months, but it was not. When I started learning English I realized that there were a lot of things to learn.
I remember my teacher Dolores Said,"It is not enough to speak, you should speak and write English If you want to get a better job in the future".
Then I came to Santa Cruz Adult School. EWvery day I had been coming to school for the first seven months without skipping any classes. Unfurtunately I stopped coming to the school when I started working. I felt deep inside me that I needed to learn more than I knew. Even my daughter had a hard time to learn ESL. She felt the same way as me. She and I worked together doing our homework and my husband helped us with the pronunciation. Somewhere along the line I have learned it enough to go shopping, working and speaking with my new friends. I hope to learn it more and be able to speak without fears anywhere, with anybody. The Santa Cruz Adult School's studants are lucky, including me, because we have wonderful, patient, lovely, generous teachers, Because every body comes to this school to learn and understand English.
Thanks a lot to all of you and God bless you forever.

  115. "Adult School" is near Safeway and a convenient location. There are many learning classes and you will be able to select what you need to study. Especially, you will be favorite that you have a friendship between many classmates. They are a diversity of culture and race, gender. I came from Japan 2 months ago. As soon as I and my family joined in English class,we had many kind friends. While breakdown time, some classmate gave us some information and advice about shopping around, renting an apartment, going to hospital...and so on. My teacher is very gentle and active. We are encouraged by her everyday. If you want to know anything, please send to school office Email. Let us go to sign in!!

  123. Thank you to those far-sighted people in the Santa Cruz Adult School who purchased the Posit Science Auditory course for instruction several years ago. I have just completed a semester in Adult School using this program and can recommend it highly to anyone wanting to sharpen the connection between the hearing mechanism and the brain, a connection necessary for retaining, organizing and using information in memory. Instructor Donna LaValley very capably led our class of 20 through this series of computer exercises, and enhanced the program with challenging puzzles, mind-games, and reading material. A mind-expanding, worthwhile course for baby-boomers and others who wonder if they are losing their "edge."
