Sad, sad news

After hours of public comment, the Santa Cruz City Schools district board approved a preliminary budget on Wednesday 2/10/2010 that will cut $1.43 million from the Santa Cruz Adult School.  We did what we could but it did not save us in the end.

This merely reflects the reality of the sad comment made by John Collins (School Board Member) about the 'systematic dismantling of the public education system'.

It would appear that the administration will be the last to go.
I was surprised that certain Adult school leaders didn't take a more active role in promoting the school's (and the students') interests. Rather, these administrators followed the line set by their 'superiors' and didn't 'make waves'. With more unity, we might have saved our school.

As an evening ESL teacher who had hours cut last Fall, I was shocked and saddened by the Sentinel article which stated that teachers have taken "no cuts" but which portrayed the classified staff as willing to sacrifice, while teachers are not. This article was unfair. We have all given up a lot recently.

The real losers are the students and their families. They are the ones taking the cuts.
The adult school met a real, existing need...one that won't just disappear. How it will get met in the future will demand some thought and creative implementation.

One thing's for sure...if the energy evident at these board meetings can be harnessed and used for a solution, then no amount of administrative foot-dragging need stop us.
